Dominican Life: Study

Monday, May 27, 2019
"So, I guess you study a lot…” is one of the more common responses when people find out I’m a Dominican. It has the advantage of being one of the more accurate ideas that people have of the life of a Dominican; I study for my formation as a priest, but also as part of the spiritual discipline of the life I’ve undertaken. The Constitutions of the Order tell us that we should be zealous in our study (LCO, 77, §1), but this shouldn’t be to get top marks in an essay, as nice as it is when this happens, nor should it just be to make us effective for the doctrinal service of the Church, but should be directed to enabling us to ponder in our hearts the manifold wisdom of God (LCO, 77, §2).  Read more

Dominican Life: Community life.

Friday, March 08, 2019

Community Life is one of the most important aspects of Dominican Life and a distinguishing feature between the religious life and the life of the diocesan clergy. On the face of it, their personalities and character are quite different, and while Bl Pier Giorgio could certainly be boisterous, he certainly does not seem to have the kind of temperament that one would associate with Savonarola. Read more

St Albert the Great

Tuesday, November 15, 2016
‘Today, perhaps more than ever before, the world is eager to make a clean sweep of its past… In such [a world], what use to celebrate the praises of St Albert? The very name sounds worse than medieval; it sounds Victorian.’ So said the famous Fr Ronald Knox in the sermon he preached at our priory here in Oxford on 16 May 1932 at the opening of a solemn triduum in honour of the newly canonised St Albert the Great.  Read more
